The Community R-6 girls built an insurmountable lead against the host school.

The Lady Trojans defeated Central Activities Conference foe New Franklin 60-52 on Saturday in the first round of the New Franklin tournament. Community (7-4) won in the rematch from last season’s championship game after outscoring the Lady Bulldogs 38-28 in the first half and being led by Kylie Brooks’ double-double of 28 points and 15 rebounds.

Head coach Bob Curtis said both teams were worn out by the fourth quarter and this included New Franklin’s guard duo of Lily Chitwood and Lydia Burnett.

The guard tandem of Lily Chitwood and Lydia Burnett are offensively very hard to handle,” Curtis said. “We really worked hard to contain them today, and they combined for 32 even though we did a nice job making them work for everything.”

Peyton Beamer finished with 12 points, six rebounds and four assists, Alyssa Beamer had 10 points and three steals, Aaliyah Welch had six points and 10 rebounds, and Brooklynn Glasgow had four points and three steals. Curtis said Brooks was the biggest challenge for New Franklin (6-4).

“They had no answer for Kylie today as she was taking great shots, making her free throws and cleaning the glass,” Curtis said. “Two Lady Bulldogs fouled out trying to contain her.”

Community takes on the No. 1 seed Fayette (9-2) in the semifinals at 6 p.m. Wednesday in New Franklin’s new gym.
