Community R-6 softball had a list of accomplishments this season.
The Lady Trojans won their fourth Central Activities Conference title in four years, while going undefeated in conference play yet again this season, and set a new single-season program record with 22 wins. Four players who were instrumental in those feats were senior Paige Painter, senior Brooklynn Glasgow and sophomore Jocelyn Curtis, who each earned first team all-conference and all-district honors, and senior Alyssa Beamer, who was named as an all-conference honorable mention and second team all-district.
Painter was named to the all-conference team for the first time after being all-district last year and was good enough to be named the conference MVP. She’s the fourth Lady Trojan in five years to be named the conference MVP, following names such as Natalie Thomas, Emma Angel and Sarah Angel.
At the plate, Painter displayed added power by hitting four of her career six home runs this season; finishing with a slash line of a .391 batting average, a .446 on-base percentage and a .591 slugging percentage; 47 RBI and 10 doubles. In the circle, she had a 2.69 ERA, 65 strikeouts and an 11-1 record, and allowed 63 hits and 21 walks in 87⅓ innings.
“Paige played a key role for us offensively and defensively this year,” head coach Kendra Murphy said. “She led our team in batting average and RBI. She was a huge part of our success this year.”
Glasgow has been Community’s catcher for several years, earning her third all-conference honor this season. She finished with a slash line of .382/.508/.520, 21 RBI, 21 walks, 47 runs and 11 doubles and owned a perfect fielding percentage, five passed balls and nine assists at catcher. It was announced this week that Glasgow will be playing in college for Graceland University, a NAIA school in Lamoni, Iowa.
“Brooklynn is the type of kid everybody wants on their team,” Murphy said. “She is a natural leader and has an excellent work ethic. If you take out the first two weeks of the season, her batting average goes up almost a full 70 points to .450.”
Curtis was Community’s other pitcher that earned postseason honors for the first time this season. She stood out mostly as the team’s No. 1 pitcher by finishing with a 2.18 ERA, 83 strikeouts, a 12-9 record, 102 hits and 32 walks in 109⅓ innings but had solid numbers at the plate that included a slash line of .286/.390/.362, 29 RBI and eight doubles.
Murphy said Curtis had one really bad game in the 12-10 Class 1 District 4 tournament loss to Clopton but was far better time and time again during the season by pitching in 22 of Community’s 32 games, closing several games that were tied, and earning key victories against Marceline, New Bloomfield and Cairo.
“Prior to the district game against Clopton, she only had 22 walks on the season,” Murphy said. “Despite what happened in the district tournament, which was completely uncharacteristic of her, she is one of the best pitchers in the district.”
Beamer easily reminded everybody what her value was to the Lady Trojans based on her defense in center field. The first-time all-conference player displayed a lot of quickness that resulted in her only committing three errors, recording two assists, and making several diving catches and other impressive plays. At the plate, Beamer had 10 stolen bases, 17 RBI, two doubles and two triples.
“Alyssa was a huge staple of our defense this season,” Murphy said. “She covered a lot of ground and saved a lot of runs.”
