Community R-6 softball overcame two Central Activities Conference teams to wrap up Saturday’s tournament well.
The Lady Trojans lost 7-5 to Jamestown in the first round of the New Franklin Softball Tournament before defeating conference foes Madison 9-4 and New Franklin 12-1 to take fifth place. They combined for 23 hits in their two victories.
Community (8-2) were as close as 6-5 in the sixth inning against Jamestown after scoring five runs but fell short. The Lady Eagles used a double and triple in the fifth inning to take a 6-0 lead against Jocelyn Curtis. Curtis and Painter began the Lady Trojans’ scoring in the five-run inning with back-to-back RBI doubles, but Community left the winning run at the plate in the seventh inning.
Against Madison, Community trailed 2-0 after one inning but then tied in the second and overtook the Lady Panthers in the third inning. Painter, Amy McCurdy and Alyssa Beamer hit Madison with a RBI double, double and then triple that aided in the 6-2 advantage. Painter and McCurdy each finished 2-for-3 with a RBI, Peyton Schafer went 2-for-3, and Painter struck out eight and allowed two earned runs on two hits and three walks in six innings.
The Lady Trojans were in control of New Franklin from the start as they owned a 9-0 lead after four innings. Rylee Rafferty and Brooklynn Glasgow picked up back-to-back RBI singles to make it 4-0 in the second inning. Rafferty finished 3-for-3 with a RBI, Schafer was 2-for-4 with two RBI, Beamer finished 3-for-4 but created havoc after that with four runs scored and three stolen bases, and Curtis struck out 11 and allowed one unearned run on one hit in six innings.
Community (1-0 CAC) hosted conference rival Slater (1-3, 1-2 CAC) on Tuesday and visiting Paris with Faith Walk (3-4) at 5 p.m. today.
