Over the next couple months, there will be a lot of changes at the future home of the Central Missouri Veterans Monument.
The Central Missouri Veterans Monument Foundation officially broke ground on the monument on July 15. Shane Owen of Owen Construction prepared the site for concrete and a week later, Russ Davis, CMVMF president, was standing on the 70-foot circular slab of concrete visualizing the finished project.
“I’m getting anxious,” Davis said.
With the monument’s foundation laid, the next phase of construction will be the parking lot. Davis said the plans involve leveling the site as much as possible and making a 100 by 150 foot asphalt parking lot.
Construction of the parking lot is expected to begin today.
After that, Davis said it will be time to mount the granite monuments, which are currently being engraved and are expected to be completed by September.
The site will also feature three flags – the Missouri State Flag, American Flag and the POW/MIA Flag as well as a folded flag made of steel, which will serve as the site’s centerpiece. The folded steel flag will be 4 feet wide by 8 feet tall and will be constructed by Fluid Power Support.
The final piece, Davis said, will be a sign that reads “All gave some, some gave all,” which will arch over the steel flag. That part is designed by Jones Abrasive Waterjet Services.
For the time being, Davis will try to manage his expectations, but with how quickly everything is coming together, it’s hard not to get excited. At this time, there is no concrete completion date, but Davis said it would be really nice to have enough done so that the foundation can do a dedication on Veterans Day.
