As expected the Mexico City Council left out changes to the city’s sidewalk ordinance that were requested by developers.
The council made two updates to the ordinance that included sidewalks that must be constructed on both sides of the street if the road is on the city’s master trail plan. The council made a compromise with developers and is requiring sidewalks in new developments on only one side of the street.
The issue started this summer when two developers requested variances for new developments that wouldn’t require sidewalks at all. The city’s Planning and Zoning Commission initially agreed but when the issue went to the council the variances were halted and an overall discussion about the city’s ordinance started.
Developers had sought two changes to the city’s ordinance that would only require sidewalks in a new development if existing sidewalks were within 1,000 feet of the street or the adjoining subdivision did not have sidewalks.
The ordinance was presented at the Oct. 9 meeting and no discussion was had before a motion was made to read and approve the changes. All five members of the council voted in favor of the changes.
In other business, the council also approved the final plat of Mexico Industrial Park Plat III which has a listed address of 2501 Lakeview Drive. The change essentially splits the lot into two pieces with the larger piece being 11.07 acres and the smaller tract being 2.97 acres. City Community Development Director Rita Jackson told the council United Credit Union purchased part of the land for an office building and potential retail.
