The Mexico City Council has sent an issue back to the Planning and Zoning Board about sidewalks in a new subdivision being built.

The Board recommended granting a variance to the developer at the Park Creek Subdivision Phase 2 Plat 2 to not include sidewalks in the plans. Board Member Chris Miller said the city put in the ordinance for a reason. The city just passed an ordinance recently that said sidewalks have to be in all new developments. Developers argue the sidewalks don’t go anywhere.

“I know they don’t go anywhere now but neither did the sidewalk that was put in for the workforce housing,” Miller said. “Now it’s going to tie into something. If we leave it out it’s never going to come.”

Board Member Chris Williams said he understands the developer's issue and somewhat agrees with their stance. However, the city didn’t make any exceptions when drafting the ordinance.

“I get it. It makes perfect sense not to do it,” Williams said. “When we did the ordinance we didn’t exclude anybody.”

The developers were at the meeting and said the neighborhoods that are currently being developed are not including sidewalks. 

Also concerning sidewalks the council approved a change order for more than $19,000 that will add to the ongoing project on Teal Lake Road and add additional work at Lakeview Park on the walking trail. 

The order will include a new trail that is 135 feet long and about 30 feet wide in the park. About $6,000 of the change order will include adding feet to the project on Teal Lake Road, improving drainage, and upgrading the concrete.
