Community R-6 defense difference in 6-3 loss to Elsberry in regular season finale
Community R-6 softball had some shaky defense on Tuesday, but districts hadn’t started yet.
The Lady Trojans committed seven errors to allow five unearned runs in a 6-3 loss at home to Class 2 Elsberry. It was the regular season finale for Community and was also a benefit game for the family of Penelope Sommer to help with their medical expenses.
The Lady Trojans raised $500 on Tuesday night and ended with the program’s best regular-season record ever at 22-9.
Elsberry (18-4-1) took a 4-0 lead after the second inning and then 6-0 going into the bottom half of the fourth inning. The Lady Trojans handled one ground ball in the second inning to record the second out along with surrendering a run but struggled with the next couple and then committed an error to lead off the fourth inning.
Community put its first two runs on the scoreboard in the fourth inning when Chloe Johnson walked and Amy McCurdy scored on a passed ball. Alyssa Beamer had a RBI single in the sixth inning, making it 6-3 and setting up two runners on. The Lady Trojans tallied one more hit the rest of the game.
Brooklynn Glasgow finished 2-for-4, Beamer, McCurdy and Jocelyn Curtis each had a hit, and Peyton Schafer walked twice. Curtis struck out eight and allowed one earned run on six hits in seven innings to combat nine strikeouts and one earned run on four hits and six walks allowed in six innings by Kenzie Koch.
Community begins the Class 1 District 4 tournament at 3 p.m. Saturday against No. 8 seed Clopton (5-15-1) after taking its first-round bye as the No. 1 seed.
