Community R-6 took its free passes and turned them into costly runs.

The Lady Trojans turned a few walks late in their game on Monday at Glasgow into runs to edge their Central Activities Conference foe 7-6 in eight innings. Community won its conference opener to improve to a quick 2-0 on the season as it drew its four of five walks in the sixth and eighth innings, scoring a pair of them.

Chloe Johnson took a leadoff walk in the sixth inning and came around to score to help Community erase a two-run deficit to start the inning and then Peyton Schafer scored on Paige Painter’s groundout for the winning run in the eighth inning.

Painter led the offense by going 2-for-5 with three RBI, Amy McCurdy was 2-for-4 and Rylee Raffery had two walks and an RBI. Jocelyn Curtis pitched 4⅓ innings of shutout ball with five strikeouts and four hits, holding down Glasgow after five-run fourth inning.

Lady Trojan bats hot for 9-4 season-opening win vs South Callaway

Community R-6 softball’s game at home on Friday had to be moved back due to the heat, but the weather wasn’t the only hot thing.

The Lady Trojans defeated South Callaway 9-4 on 12 hits, overcoming a 2-1 deficit after the second inning and five errors. Community scored six of its runs in the fifth and sixth innings as Alyssa Beamer and Paige Painter led the offense with respective performances of 2-for-4 with two RBI, a double and a triple and 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI.

Painter added three solid frames of pitching as well with one earned run on two hits and three strikeouts. Jocelyn Curtis started the day in the circle with four innings of one earned run on two hits.

South Callaway scored first in the first inning and added another in the second inning to respond to Painter’s RBI in the previous inning. After picking up the Lady Bulldogs’ RBI in the first inning, Haley White came through again in the fifth inning with a RBI double to tie Community at 3.

The Lady Trojans took the lead for good in the bottom half of the fifth with RBI singles by Taylor Johnson, Rylee Rafferty and Brooklynn Glasgow. Beamer brought home two runs with a triple in the sixth inning.
