Community R-6 softball wins Cairo consolation, holds off final opponents

Community R-6 softball fought hard for fifth place on Saturday in the Cairo tournament.

The Lady Trojans scored eight runs in the fifth inning or later to help hold off New Bloomfield 6-3 and North Callaway 9-7 in eight innings to win the consolation prize after losing 11-6 to Moberly in six innings in the morning. Jocelyn Curtis had four RBI and Rylee Raffery scored five runs in the victories.

Class 3 Moberly scored seven runs in the first four innings for a 7-5 lead. Brooklyn Glasgow hit a home run, Alyssa Beamer and Chloe Johnson each had an RBI, and Peyton Schafer scored two runs, but the deficit was too much.

Community (13-3) scored first against New Bloomfield, taking a 4-1 lead after three innings with the help of three RBI groundouts. Curtis gave the Lady Trojans some insurance in the seventh inning with a two-RBI double, which was her second double of the game. She also pitched seven innings with nine hits, six strikeouts and three runs.

The Lady Trojans had a 7-5 lead against North Callaway only for Kymorie Myers to drive in a run with a double — as part of her three-RBI game — and Faith Cash to ground out to score the tying run. In extra innings, the first four Lady Trojans reached as Curtis’ single scored two runs in the eighth inning. Five Lady Trojans each had one RBI, and Paige Painter pitched five innings with four hits, three earned runs and three strikeouts.

Community (4-0 CAC) played at Central Activities Conference foe New Franklin (5-7, 2-1 CAC) on Monday before playing at Westran (5-5).
