Deborah "Debbie" Buss Laughlin, 67, of Fulton, passed away on June 5, 2026, at University of Missouri Hospital.
Debbie was born on October 5, 1958, in St. Louis, Missouri, to the late Theodor Buss and the late Jean (Russell) Buss. She was raised in St. Louis surrounded by the love of her parents, grandparents, and great-grandparents, who helped shape the caring and generous person she would become.
Debbie moved to Fulton to attend William Woods University and often joked that she simply never left. Fulton became her home, and over the years she became an active member of the community she loved.
On March 17, 1995, she was united in marriage to Mike Laughlin, who survives her passing.
Debbie dedicated much of her life to education, serving as a special education teacher at Fulton Middle School. She had a special gift for encouraging and supporting her students and found great fulfillment in helping others succeed. Later in life, she chose to retire early so she could devote her time to caring for her beloved grandchildren, Riley and Lauren, who were among the greatest joys of her life.
A longtime member of the Fulton Rotary Club, Debbie served her community and was honored to serve as the club's president on two occasions. She believed in giving back and was always willing to lend a helping hand wherever it was needed.
Debbie was a friend to many. She was known for her generous spirit, welcoming smile, and ability to make everyone feel valued. She loved spending time with family and friends and was always ready for a good time—whether it was a family gathering, a lunch date with friends, a winery trip, or one of the many outings with her beloved "Thirsty Thursday" girls. Her laughter, kindness, and enthusiasm for life left a lasting impression on all who knew her.
More than anything, Debbie treasured the time she spent with those she loved, especially her grandchildren. The memories she created with family and friends will continue to be cherished for years to come.
Her memory will continue to be cherished by her husband Mike, daughter, Margaret “Molly” McTaggart Hanley (Josh), sisters, Jane Hilboldt (Denny), Dorothy Buss (Don), and grandchildren, Riley and Lauren Hanley; aunt, Margaret "Peggy" Russell, along with numerous nieces and nephews, and many, many close friends.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, June 20, 2026 at The Fulton Country Club from 4:00 pm – 6:00 pm.
