A former Mexico teacher pleaded guilty to having a sex with a student and will be sentenced in January.
Janae Marie Nunnelly, of the 1500 block of Ashley Court in Mexico, entered the guilty plea during a court appearance Oct. 14, according to online court records. She was initially charged with two counts of having sexual contact with a student, but one of the charges was dismissed at last week's hearing.
Nunnelly’s sentencing has been scheduled for 9 a.m. Jan. 12.
Nunnelly, a Mexico High School graduate, taught at Eugene Field Elementary School. Her employment with the district was terminated Feb. 28. She began her employment with the district as a paraprofessional in September 2020, according to previous reporting.
The Mexico Public Safety Department was informed by the school district on Feb. 25 that Nunnelly had been engaged in a sexual relationship with a current student.
During the investigation, the male victim told police he had sex with Nunnelly two times in June 2024. Both times, he met with Nunnelly in Laddonia, and she transported him to her residence in Mexico, according to the probable cause statement.
Nunnelly also was accused of having sex with a second student between March 2022 and April 2022 when the original charges were filed. The second male told police the sexual encounters started while he was a student and continued until early 2024. He graduated in 2022.
