North Callaway baseball’s season ended early in districts to Class 3 state runner-up South Callaway, but a good core of players led the program to its first winning record in four years.
The 15-9 Thunderbirds had a first team all-Eastern Missouri Conference and all-district player in upcoming Columbia College Cougar Braydn O’Neal, had Sam Pezold be a second team all-conference and all-district player, and had seniors Matthew Weber and Jordan Fishburn be named to the Class 3 District 7 team.
O’Neal led in several offensive categories by hitting .455 and owning a .742 slugging percentage to make him the lone Thunderbird with an OPS over 1.000 (1.351), finishing with a .609 on-base percentage, 31 RBI, 30 runs, 30 hits, 23 stolen bases, nine doubles and five triples.
Pezold had a .276 average and .400 on-base along with 16 hits, 12 RBI and five doubles at the plate but stood out more on the mound this year. He finished with a 3.27 ERA, struck out 32 while walking only eight in 25⅔ innings.
Weber tied O’Neal for the team lead with 31 RBI while hitting .312, slugging .500, and finishing with 25 hits, eight stolen bases, six doubles and three triples. On the mound, Weber had a 2.74 ERA with nine strikeouts in 7⅔ innings.
Fishburn led the team with 25 walks, which was ahead of O’Neal’s 23 walks, and finished with a .311 average, .523 on-base, .442 slugging, 25 runs, 19 hits, 14 RBI and eight doubles.
