GFWC Mexico Women’s Club met on Feb. 9 at the YMCA Café with President Gailyn Fennewald presiding. The meeting was hosted by members of the Education and Libraries Committee: Lara Ryan, Deborah Teague and Beverly MacFarlane. Their project was a monetary donation to the Children’s Therapy and Early Education School to help with the construction of their new playground.
Lauren Oliver, director of the Children’s Therapy and Early Education School, gave the program and spoke about the school’s history and the population it serves. Parents are not charged for the school’s services. Lauren then spoke of the need for a new playground, which will be named after a beloved employee, Sara Parmenter Robertson, daughter of GFWC member Lana Parmenter. The members donated $235 towards the new playground.
Donations were collected for Missouri Girls’ Town and National Organ Donor Association. Snacks and small gift items were also donated to be used by residents of Teal Lake Assisted Living.
Birthday cakes will be delivered to the Arbors for the Feb. 20 birthday party. This will be coordinated by Valine Perll.
Valine Perll reported that members travelled to Missouri Girls Town on Feb. 2 and provided refreshments and a Valentine craft project, which the girls really enjoyed. The next event will be March 2. Members were asked to bring Easter candy to the March meeting to put in the girls’ Easter baskets.
St. Brendan’s school art was still on display at the library. The next school to have their art displayed will be Eugene Field Elementary School.
Members will be selling geraniums the month of March for delivery the first Saturday in May. This is a major fundraiser for the club which supports donations to local organizations.
The next meeting will be Monday, March 9, at noon at the YMCA. This is the annual salad luncheon with guests invited from other district clubs. The Civic Engagement and Outreach Committee will be hosting. Committee members are Beverly Borgeson, Carolyn Dragoo, Sherry Medley and Christy Smiley.
