The Mexico Bulldogs defeated the Fulton Hornets 49-28, capturing the Highway 54 trophy and rebounding from the previous week’s loss at Hannibal.
Mexico (3-2) poured in points in the second quarter and Fulton couldn’t put together enough offense to come back and take the lead.
The Bulldogs came in looking to limit Fulton’s dual-threat quarterback Courtland Simmons, who diced up the Bulldogs for 161 yards, one touchdown and one pick along with 97 yards and a touchdown on the ground.
“We knew we probably couldn’t stop him but hope to contain him and we did that,” Mexico head coach Steve Haag said.
The Bulldogs fired out of the gate after going scoreless until the end of the first half against Hannibal last week, recovering a fumble and scoring on a Ty Prince long run on the fifth play from scrimmage.
“We needed to start out quick and we did,” Haag said.
The Bulldogs and Hornets (0-6) traded scores through the beginning of the second quarter, the score was 14-13 after a Fulton rushing touchdown.
Mexico’s dominant rushing attack revved into gear from that point, scoring three unanswered touchdowns — two Prince runs in the second quarter and a Michael White run in the third — to give the Bulldogs a 35-13 lead.
“I thought once we got that three-touchdown lead that we would be able to control it on the
offense when we got the ball and spend a little clock, and that’s what happened,” Haag said.
The Hornets tried to claw back but a Dante Billups 60-yard scamper in the third quarter all but sealed the win for the Bulldogs.
The Hornets couldn’t stop the two-pronged, option rushing attack of Billups and Prince. Billups ran for 229 yards and two scores on 20 carries and Prince ran 13 times for 80 yards and three
touchdowns.
“The outside backer wasn’t filling and taking the full-back and he was taking quarterback,” Haag said. “So Ty knows that, gave it to Dante and Dante did the rest.”
Running back and linebacker Isaiah Reams saw the field in limited fashion after missing the last two weeks with an injury.
“Coming off that, not having a ton of football reps, we were able to get him on the defensive side, keep him rested, get him in there for a few plays,” Haag said.
This Friday, Mexico hosts Kirksville (4-2) at 7 p.m.
