North Callaway High School recently presented the Jerry Schoppenhorst Male and Female Athletes of the Year awards.
This year’s recipients are senior multi-sport athletes, senior Kyanne Kellerman and junior Braydn O’Neal. Both were presented the award by Schoppenhorst.
This award is presented in honor of the dedication to Thunderbird athletics that Schoppenhorst — better known as “Chop” — has shown over the many years he has been the school’s unofficial sports information director.
The Schoppenhorst award is voted on by all head coaches at North Callaway and may be presented to any North Callaway High School student who participated in a varsity sport this school year. It may be, but does not have to be, a senior.
Consideration is given based on the following criteria: attitude, physical ability, college potential, number of sports involved in, impact on their team success, desire/work ethic and sportsmanship.
O’Neal was the quarterback during football season, the point guard during basketball season and shortstop and pitcher during baseball season. He earned first-team all-Eastern Missouri Conference baseball honors as a utility player after leading the team in batting average (.403), on base percentage (.545), hits (27), runs (30) and 28 stolen bases (28 out of 29 attempts) and owning a 3.05 ERA in seven appearances on the mound. On May 9 in a 16–4 win at Clopton, O’Neal finished 6-for-6 to tie the school single-game hits record set by Jake Baumgartner.
Kellerman participated in softball, basketball and track. During basketball season, she averaged 6.8 points per game, led the team in rebounds at four per game and was one of three Ladybirds to average at least two steals with 2.5 per game. Kellerman also set career-highs in points per game with 14 against South Callaway and Wright City and steals per game with six against Van-Far.
