The Mexico girls offense hasn't looked that good in a while.
The Lady Bulldogs won their first game in the Chris Hotop Classic on Saturday morning against Owensville, winning 7-2 to score their most goals in a game since a 10-1 victory over Moberly in 2014. Bella Cummings and Marali Herrera each two goals; Emily Moppin, Bailey Christianson and Zoey Norton had one goal; and Claire Hudson finished with three assists. Mexico (2-1) outshot Owensville (1-3) -- a school it has lost to twice by one goal in the Classic -- 19-8 and Cassandra Young had five saves in goal for the Lady Bulldogs. At halftime, Mexico led 2-1 before a big second half, which included three goals in four minutes from Christianson, Norton and Cummings to make it 6-2.
"We were unselfish at times," head coach Sarah Olson said. "Instead of taking that slightly off-balance shot or the slightly blocked shot, we passed it instead. Those, a lot of times, led to goals."
Mexico plays in the championship game for the second straight year against either Jefferson City (2-1) or reigning champion Festus (3-0) at 4 p.m. today.
