The Class 1 No. 6 Community R-6 Lady Trojans proved why they were state-ranked in the first state softball polls recently released.
Community trailed Class 2 Westran 4-2 but scored five runs in the fifth and sixth innings to win 7-4 Wednesday at home. Myla Carroll had the go-ahead two RBI with two outs and the bases loaded in the fifth inning, and Amy McCurdy finished 3-for-4 with two RBI and two doubles. Peyton Schafer went 2-for-4 with three runs and a double, and Jocelyn Curtis scattered 10 hits to Westran (6-7) in seven innings but struck out 11 and retired nine of the last 10 batters she faced.
Community (13-5, 4-1 CAC) hosts Central Activities Conference foe Madison (3-9, 0-3 CAC) at 5 p.m. Thursday.
