Lady Trojans' comeback not enough in 42-35 semifinal loss to Westran

The Community R-6 girls were down 37-19 early in the fourth quarter but didn't go away quietly.

The Lady Trojans cut the deficit to as low as six points but lost 42-35 to top seed Westran (14-5) on Thursday in the semifinals of the Sturgeon Tournament. Community (13-5) was outscored 16-3 in the third quarter and didn't record a field goal in the eight minutes to enter the fourth down 32-17. Westran outrebounded the Lady Trojans 37-23 in its 10th straight win and first win against Community since 2007.  Aaliyah Welch led Community with 11 points and nine rebounds, Peyton Beamer followed with nine points, seven steals and three 3-pointers, and Jocelyn Curtis finished with nine points. Emma Wortmann led Westran with 11 points, 13 rebounds and four blocks, Jaelyn Miller had eight points, eight rebounds and six steals, and Kylee Hayes finished with eight points and three steals.

Community faces New Franklin (13-6) for third place at 2 p.m. Saturday in the third meeting between the conference foes this season, following a 50-29 loss and 37-29 win against the Lady Bulldogs.
