Rising costs aren’t just hitting your household — they’re impacting your local newspaper, too.
At The Mexico Ledger, the price of producing, printing and delivering the news has climbed sharply in recent years. Like many small businesses, we’re being forced to make difficult decisions about how we continue to serve our community.
Since 1855, The Ledger has been committed to delivering local journalism you can trust. In 2020, when I purchased the newspaper, that mission was renewed with a focus on local ownership and community-first reporting. Each week, our goal is simple: to produce the best newspaper possible and serve as a true reflection of Audrain County.
That means covering the decisions made at city hall and school board meetings. It means telling the stories of our student-athletes, highlighting community events, and recognizing the people and organizations that make this area special. Our coverage is a recording of our community’s history.
But continuing that work comes at a cost.
Beginning this week, we are launching our “Support Local Journalism” campaign, running through June 14. We are asking readers who value this newspaper to consider making a donation to help sustain it.
Your support will go directly toward the essential costs of producing The Ledger — printing, staffing and distribution — ensuring we can continue delivering the coverage you rely on each week.
Without additional support, we will be forced to make difficult choices about where we focus our coverage. That could include reducing reporting in outlying areas beyond Audrain County, including long-standing sports coverage of North Callaway and Centralia high schools. These are communities we care deeply about, but continuing that coverage requires stronger financial support.
Local journalism doesn’t exist without local support.
If you believe in the role The Mexico Ledger plays in this community, we encourage you to take part in this campaign. To learn more or contribute, visit mexicoledger.com/donate. Donations can also be mailed to The Mexico Ledger, P.O. Box 8, Mexico, MO 65265. Please include “Support Local Journalism” in the memo line.
The future of local news in this community depends on the people who live here.
Now is the time to stand behind it.
