Little Dixie fire officials issue warning about conditions

Posted

Several fires in the area prompted Little Dixie Fire Protection officials to warn the public about the drought conditions even with the limited amount of recent rain present.

“The vegetation is still extremely dry on top even though the ground is still wet,” the fire protection district stated in a news release. “The wet ground creates issues with getting vehicles into the scene.”

The release added that the National Weather Service has issued a Red Flag Warning for any burning in the area because of low humidity and strong winds for the next few days.

“Please refrain from any open burning during the warning,” the release stated.

On March 14, fire district personnel responded to several calls for service, with the most significant one being in the 21000 block of Highway HH in which responders found 40 acres of brush and woods burning and being fueled by high winds. The release stated 18 personnel responded along with two tankers, four brush trucks and a John Deere UTV. North Callaway Fire District assisted with one brush truck and five personnel. The fire’s cause is still under investigation.
