When Kaitlyn Camp started selling Rainbow vacuums, she had no idea it would lead to a business of her own.
Kaitlyn and her co-owner and husband Devin have turned an accidental side hustle into a career as they officially cut the ribbon for Kaitlyn’s Cleaning Service LLC’s first brick and mortar location at 300 East Liberty Street June 26.
“I sold Rainbow vacuums for a while and people kept saying, ‘Well, I just want you to clean my house with a Rainbow,’ so that’s kind of what happened; I started cleaning houses,” Kaitlyn said.
For a brief stint in 2018, she did cash jobs for house cleaning services and Devin helped her clean cars out of their driveway. But the business gained traction fast so in 2019, Kaitlyn got her business license.
“It was never something that I actually expected to get into, but it works,” Kaitlyn said.
Devin added that it was a complete surprise to him as well.
Kaitlyn and Devin, both lifelong Mexico residents and Mexico High School graduates, began dating in their sophomore year and they have been together ever since. They were married in 2016 and they have two children.
When she first started the business, Kaitlyn was cleaning 30-40 hours a week with a baby strapped to her back while Devin was at work. Once he was off, he was helping Kaitlyn to keep up with demand.
The business allowed Devin to eventually quit his job and see the kids more often, even if that means taking them to work with him.
Their first commercial contract was for the dialysis clinic in Mexico at the end of 2019.
“Now we have around 35 commercial properties and we’re just trying to grow but keep up the standards while we grow,” Kaitlyn said.
She and Devin are still learning how to make the transition from employee to employer.
“I just learned everything on my own,” Kaitlyn said. “I never had somebody that told me how to navigate it.”
After high school, Devin went straight into the workforce and Kaitlyn attempted to go to college but said it just wasn’t for her. She is passionate about proving that even without college, a person can still be successful.
“I have never been in management anywhere I worked,” Kaitlyn said. “I was always just a regular employee and so was (Devin), so we’re still learning a lot.”
Their experience as employees began to lay the foundation for how they wanted to operate their business.
“We were in everyone else’s shoes before,” Devin said. “Dealing with other disgruntled employees and other disgruntled management, I feel like that helped us out a lot – being able to understand people when they come with problems and they have their own home life and stuff going on.”
But there is a fine line between wanting to be an understanding employer and running a business, and the Camps are still trying to figure that out as they grow.
While they know how it sounds, Kaitlyn and Devin started their entrepreneurial journey with no clear goal in mind and they never set out to be business owners.
“It’s been a funny experience if you think about it,” Devin said.
Now they have a clear vision for their future.
Kaitlyn’s Cleaning Service is a fully fledged LLC with 20 employees serving Mexico, Fulton, Montgomery County and more. With their new location, they have a conference room for interviews with potential clients, dedicated office space for their staff and a kids room for employees with children.
They decided to keep their business in their hometown because of its central location and their love for the place they grew up.
“We feel like we have been given a lot of opportunities in Mexico and we want to give back and help other people here in town,” Devin said.
