Mexico City Council on March 10 approved recommended tourism funding for local organizations.
The city currently has a tourism tax that is collected by the hotels/motels within the city limits. The approved resolution authorizes the city manager to execute agreements with various organizations to receive tourism funding for their advertising campaign.
Here were the approved amounts for organizations from the Mexico Tourism Commission:
Also at the meeting, council:
– Approved authorizing the city manager to enter into an agreement with the Miss Missouri Scholarship Organization, Inc. to assist in promoting tourism in the city of Mexico.
The 2024–2025 annual budget allows $10,000 for use by the Miss Missouri Organization Inc., a council memo stated. The city has been providing general fund support to the Miss Missouri Scholarship Organization Inc. for several years with contributions being at the $10,000 level since 2001, with an exception made in the 2019-20 budget year because of the pandemic.
– Approved authorizing the acceptance of temporary construction easements for the East Anderson Street Stormwater Improvement Project, in the area of between North Calhoun Street and North Jefferson Street as well as along North Jefferson Street, between East Anderson Street and the Town Branch. The current design allows all public utilities to remain in the public right-of-way with no additional right-of-way needing to be acquired (that is, permanent easements). The project is part of an American Rescue Plan Act grant.
The memo stated that in order to provide some additional room for construction, the city’s consultant asked for a temporary construction easement along the front of several lots within the project extents, allowing the contractor, Sam Gaines Construction, additional room for final grading, which will lead to “a more aesthetically pleasing restoration for the residents.” All residents within the project scope have agreed to donate a temporary construction easement to the city. These easements will expire upon completion of the project.
– Approved an ordinance authorizing the city manager to sign a second supplemental agreement with the Missouri Highways and Transportation Commission for Pollock Road Bridge replacement.
The agenda memo stated the city is currently evaluating bids to replace the existing Pollock Road Bridge as part of a grant. Final plans have been submitted to the Missouri Department of Transportation and have been approved.
The grant is administered through MODOT and had an initial deadline of Nov. 1, 2024, for execution of a contract to begin construction. Because of delays caused by wetland mitigation and right-of-way acquisition, the Supplemental Agreement No. 1’s deadline was extended to March 1. Because of delays during the review phase for obligation of federal funds, city staff said it was also now necessary to execute Supplemental Agreement No. 2 and extend the deadline to Sept. 1. The memo stated Supplemental Agreement No. 2 will provide sufficient time for staff to review the bids, obtain concurrence in award from MODOT and execute the contract for construction.
– Approved the purchase of a 2025 Ford Explorer patrol vehicle from Joe Machens Ford of Columbia for $41,936.
