A Rush Hill man has been charged with multiple child sex crimes in Audrain County, according to court records.
James Winkler, 42, is charged with five counts of child molestation-first degree, one count of rape or attempted rape-first degree, one count of statutory sodomy or attempted statutory sodomy-deviate sexual intercourse-person less than 12 years old, one count of incest and one count of abuse or neglect of a child-no sexual contact. Audrain County Prosecuting Attorney Jacob Shellabarger said in an email that Winkler is being held without bond and will have his initial bond hearing today, when the judge will advise him of the charges and check into his plans for an attorney. His next hearing is scheduled for Sept. 4.
Court filings show in 2018, Winkler was accused of trying to have sex with a victim in the victim’s bedroom at a home in Audrain County. The probable cause statement said, during the investigation, several siblings of the victim disclosed physical or sexual abuse by Winkler, and the victims “further indicated that all eight children suffered some form of abuse” by Winkler.
Court records showed other crimes with another victim that were alleged to have happened between June 1 and Aug. 20 of this year in Audrain County.
