MAT ROUNDUP: North Callaway wins team title at Priory Invitational, finishes with three champions

North Callaway clinched its second team championship of the season on Saturday.

The Thunderbirds wrestled to a victory at the Priory Invitational in St. Louis, coming away with three first-place finishes and four runners-up. They had 253 points to beat out runner-up Central’s (New Madrid County) 184.5 points and 12 other teams.

Lane Kimbley was the champion at 132 pounds after pinning five opponents, Eli Henry also had five pins to earn the 157-pound title, and Wyatt Haden had three pins for his 165-pound championship. Earning second were AJ Siegel (three pins) at 138 pounds, Cashton Holloway (three pins) at 144, Carson Safranski (four pins) at 150 and Casper Safranski (four pins) at 190.

Tristan Young and John Higgins each finished third at 113 and 126 pounds.

In a Thursday quad at Macon, North Callaway defeated Chillicothe 45-29, Palmyra 60-18, and Macon 52-24 to improve its duals record to 10-2 this season.

Mexico's Johns runner-up in girls tournament at Seckman

Freshman Alexus Johns earned a high placing amongst the few the Mexico girls sent to Imperial on Saturday.

Johns finished second in the 235B-C weight class at the Seckman Tournament, pinning three opponents before being pinned by Edwardsville’s Tayla Phillips 5:34 into the first-place match.

Layla Fierge placed sixth in the 110C weight class as she won once by pinfall against Farmington’s Kaylin Bloom but was pinned four times throughout the day.

Missouri Military Academy competes in Warrenton Tournament

After all of its cadets wrestled Saturday in Warrenton, Missouri Military Academy was good enough for the top 10.

MMA finished 10th out of 19 schools with 67 points — Father Tolton won with 203.5 points — at the Warrenton Varsity Tournament as the Colonels were led by Alex Snyder’s second-place finish at 138 pounds. Deonte Kerns was third at 113 and Trae Griffiths finished fourth at 144.

Snyder won by pin twice before being pinned by Hallsville’s Parker Crane in the first-place match. Griffiths was 3-1 with three pins before an injury cut his third-place match short.

Bryson Powell was fifth at 150 pounds was 2-2 with a major decision and a 7-5 decision, and Ryan Miles was sixth at 132 with one pinfall victory.

MMA was 4-1 in duals over the past week as the Colonels defeated South Callaway 54-24, Confluence Prep 78-0 and Missouri School for the Deaf 75-0 and lost 59-24 to Hallsville Tuesday at home, and topped Boonville 41-38 in a road dual on Friday.

Centralia boys win Highway 13 team title, finish with seven individual champions

The Centralia boys dominated the field Saturday in Higginsville.

The Panthers had seven earn first-place medals, including Brayden Dubes at 120 pounds, Weston Ward at 126, Jesse Shannon at 132, Rex Bryson at 138, Kyden Wilkerson at 157, Brayden Shelton at 165 and Seth Hasekamp at 285, to win the Highway 13 Throwdown. Centralia scored 429 points to beat out runner-up Richmond and its 266 points as well as 12 other teams.

Dubes, Ward, Shannon, Bryson and Hasekamp each pinned all of their opponents to be undefeated, Wilkerson had two pins and a 10-4 decision, and Shelton had two pins and a technical fall.

Earning second-place honors were Bryson Dubes at 106 pounds, Wyatt Adkisson at 144, Ethan Adams at 150 and Ian Tuggle at 190.

In a Thursday meet in Fulton, Centralia defeated Fulton 66-18 and Southern Boone 75-6.

Shelton, Marriott lead Lady Panthers in Higginsville

Before the boys competed Saturday in Higginsville, the Centralia girls were at Friday’s girls Highway 13 Throwdown.

Madie Shelton and Gretchen Marriott each were the runner-up at 120 and 155 pounds, respectively, and Besan Juma was fourth at 235 for a ninth-place finish out of 23 teams — with 107 points. Lathrop won with 269 points.

Shelton finished 3-2 on the day with two pinfalls and was pinned by Lathrop’s Jordan Diercks in the title match, Marriott pinned four girls before being pinned in the first-place match by Knob Noster’s Abby Sader, and Juma finished with pinfalls.
