Bertie Maxine Hancock Lincoln, age 104, went to rest with her Lord on Easter Sunday, April 9, 2023. Maxine was the daughter of Gus and Mattie (Flowers) Hancock, the youngest of seven children.
Maxine is preceded in death by her Hancock family, her husband of 70 years, Earl Lincoln, and daughter, Susan Williams. She is survived by her children, Alice (Richard) Joossens, Judith (Randall) Brown, and David (Elizabeth) Lincoln; sister-in-law and dear friend Ola Mae Lincoln Kakac; five grandchildren; six great- and one great-great-grandchild; as well as many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
The daughter of a disabled sharecropper, Maxine was a bright student and was able to attend Georgia Southwestern in Americus for two years. She began teaching school before WWII. Earl saw her singing a solo in Brunswick, Ga., where she was teaching. Earl was a Navy pilot stationed on St. Simons Island, where they lived after marrying June 7, 1944. In 1946, they left Georgia to set up dairy farming in Nodaway County, Missouri, near his parents.
After establishing their dairy farm on Little Creek Road in Centralia in 1955, Maxine became a Sunday school teacher, choir member, farmer and gardener, mother of four supporting all of their activities. She attended the University of Missouri, earned her Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees, and taught school in Hallsville and Centralia. She always loved her 5th grade students.
Maxine was a member and adult Sunday school teacher in First Christian Church of Centralia, always a Bible student and trusting God. She enjoyed learning, teaching, singing, gardening, traveling and playing Scrabble with Earl, reading, playing the piano, and visiting with her many friends.
A Celebration of Maxine’s life will be held May 27, 2023, 2 p.m., at the First Christian Church, Centralia.
