Meet Alex Finck, candidate for Mexico City Council

Posted

Name: Alex Finck

Age: 33

Hometown: Mexico

Occupation: Physician, business owner

Position sought: Mexico City Council

Previous political experience: None

Why are you running and why should people vote for you?

Our city council should be reflective of the community it serves. I have two small kids who will be affected by the decisions of city council over the coming years. Currently, there is not much representation from my generation on city council and I believe the decisions made now for our city will affect generations to come. Those decisions should have representation from the current generation of parents.

Additionally, reopening the hospital is a big challenge for our community. I believe having a physician and member of the medical community would be valuable for our city council during these deliberations and decisions.

I have a passion for revitalizing and rejuvenating Mexico. I am currently the board president of Mainstreet Mexico, an organization dedicated to revitalizing downtown. I own a small business/clinic dedicated to improving our community and its health. I am always asking myself how different problems could be solved in our community -- often from the perspective of business solutions, but also from a civic and government standpoint. I believe I am well-suited to bring thoughtful, measured deliberations to our city council.

I have my own personal goals and reasons for being on city council. But really, it's up to me to listen to your needs and goals. Every day in my clinic, I strive to understand and listen to the challenges my patients face. Only after listening and evaluating do I come up with a solution. Often, we arrive at those solutions together -- patient and physician, working hand-in-hand. I will do the same as your city council member. Let's work together to make Mexico a better place to live and raise our families.

What are your goals if elected?

Reopen the hospital with a sustainable partner who has a long-term commitment to quality local healthcare.

Improve city parks and bring a comprehensive walking and biking trail system to Mexico to allow for a healthier city, working with the Parks Department in conjunction with their Master Plan.

Encourage more public-private investment in unique solutions to problems in our city, including revitalizing downtown, creating affordable housing, ensuring affordable/accessible daycare, which allows for a robust workforce locally, helping our businesses flourish.

What issues are most pressing for your constituency?

Access to healthcare, including emergency, inpatient and surgery services locally. Imaging services (e.g. CT, MRI, ultrasound) are needed locally, as well.

Affordable housing.

Access to childcare.

Transportation challenges -- for vulnerable (e.g. elderly, disable, low income) communities getting to and from Columbia for appointments; safe walking/biking trails for families to traverse our community.
