Mexico Academic Team headed to state; ranked No. 1 in MO

The Mexico Academic Team is headed to State, ranked No. 1. At the state quarterfinals, the Mexico Bulldogs welcomed the Washington Blue Jays this Tuesday, April 23 as the winners of Class 5 District 3 took on the winner of Class 5 District 4. It was a best of three series, where the first team to win two games would book a ticket to the State Tournament at Mizzou on Saturday, May 4.

Washington took an early lead in Game 1 as they got the first tossup and took 20 out of 30 points on the bonus. This would be the only Blue Jay lead of the evening.

Camden Williams and Andrew Peuster combined to get the next 9 tossups, earning 190 of 270 possible points on the bonus to sport a 280 - 60 lead at the half.

Andrew Peuster took two of the first three tossups in the second half and Camden Williams took the other, increasing the lead to 370 - 80. The Bulldogs would coast the rest of the way to a 470 - 190 win.

Camden led with 140 points while Andrew put up 40.

Game two saw Mexico stay hot as between Camden WIlliams and Andrew Peuster, the first six tossups would all go to Mexico. Equally impressive is the bonus conversion, as the Bulldogs were able to pick up 150 out of 180 possible bonus points in the first 6 question cycles. This gave Mexico a 210 - 20 lead. The remainder of the first half was split between the Bulldogs and the Blue Jays, as the score at the half was 290 - 80 in favor of Mexico.

The second half started with Camden picking up tossup 12 and then tossup 13 went dead. But the Blue Jays would bounce back, taking the next 5 tossups, 4 of which were gotten by Hayden Ley. After 18 tossups, the Bulldogs' lead had narrowed to 330 - 240.

The Bulldogs ensured their place in the Final Four as Camden would pick up three of the final four tossups with Andrew picking up the other tossup. The Bulldogs ended with a 470 - 250 win, ending the Blue Jays season and sending Mexico back to the State Tournament.  

The Bulldogs head back to State after taking 3rd in Class 5 last season.  The Mexico Team has two tournaments left,  with State set for May 4 at Mizzou.and PACE NSC 2024 (Partnership for Academic Competition National Scholastic Championships 2024) and in Reston, Virginia which will be June 8 and 9..  

Mexico will enter the State Tournament ranked as the best team in the state and No. 13 in the nation.
