The Mexico Activity and Nutrition Center celebrated Mother’s Day early this year with a special lunch Friday afternoon. On the menu was turkey, mashed potatoes with gravy, green beans, hot rolls and cherry pie and ice cream for dessert.
“This was put together all on donations,” said Emily Lain, vice president of the Mexico Activity and Nutrition Center Board and the center’s event coordinator.
Even the meals were donated. The VFW Post 3772 paid $5 for each person’s meal, which was no small feat. Lunch started at 11 a.m. and by noon, there was still a line to get in.
Lain, who had made 50 corsages for all the mothers, said she ran out almost immediately.
“This is the way it used to be,” said Ione Bickell, Mexico Activity and Nutrition Center administrator gesturing to the crowded room.
Bickell estimated around 150 guests came to have a meal and spend the day at the center citing this “Emily Lain event” as the primary reason.
“It’s nice to see so many older adults happy,” she said.
Because no Emily Lain event is complete without live music, the afternoon began with a show by Emily Lain and Friends followed by Stan Freeman and “The Outlaws” band.
The afternoon honored all women and mothers with a special recognition for those with children serving, or who served in the military, as well as service women.
