The Mexico boys toppled another bigger school on Thursday.
The Class 4 No. 10 Bulldogs defeated Class 5 Hillcrest (5-5) 69-67 in the US Bank Holiday Tournament semifinals in Rolla a day after defeating Class 6 Hazelwood West 79-61 in the first round. This time, Mexico outscored its opponent 22-16 in the fourth quarter to earn a spot in the championship game at 6 p.m. Friday night at Rolla High School.
"Some clutch shots down the stretch and a few defensive stops is what got us back in the game," head coach Darren Pappas said.
DJ Long led Mexico (11-1) with 25 points and three 3-pointers, Jaydon Eldridge followed with 16 points and two 3-pointers, Donye Nunnelly had 10 points and PJ Perkins added eight points.
The Bulldogs try to win their second tournament championship this season after winning the Montgomery County tournament earlier this year.
