Mexico business cuts ribbon, honors friend

The Mexico Chamber of Commerce was there on Tuesday, Aug. 29, to help cut the ribbon on a fast growing Mexico business.

Tom and Brenda Cagney, owners of Abacus Logistics Solutions, cut the ribbon on a major expansion project that includes adding an additional 55,000 square feet of space which doubled the amount previously. The owners say the additional space will allow them to attract more business to Mexico. The company recently added two more smaller customers and are currently working on more.

“We are committed to working to attract more business as we see Mexico as a perfect location for centralized distribution,” Brenda said in an email. “Mexico has a great labor force, a great quality of life, and we have access to I-70, the major east/west interstate in the middle of the country. And the local government is very pro-business.”

The company has been operating in Mexico since 2010 working for a client called Aerogrow, which is now a division of Scotts Miracle Gro. The company does seed kitting and distribution for the product which is called Aerogarden.

The company rented the building from the city of Mexico until it purchased it in 2020 and immediately began a remodeling process to create more office space, a lunchroom and expanded bathrooms.

The day was also special for the Cagney because they got a chance to honor their friend and mentor Tom Herron. The Cagneys have operated a business in Mexico for more than 30 years but Herron was instrumental in helping them open Abicus.

“The opportunity to build a business in Mexico is all due to the support that we received from Tom Herron,” Cagney said in a prepared statement. “He brought us here.”

The ceremony also included the dedication of a plaque in honor of Herron. Many of Herron’s friends and family were in attendance. The plaque reads: “A visionary leader, a strong mentor, and a great friend.”

“He always placed the credit for success with those around him,” Cagney said. “He was a great man, a great mentor and I was lucky to be able to call him my friend.”

The company also thanked Flowmaster Construction and Commerce Bank, the projects financier and the city of Mexico.
