Mexico dominates in historic weekend for academic team

The Mexico High School Academic Team put on a historic performance on Saturday, Nov. 4 at the eighth annual Washington University Fall Academic Tournament.

Mexico brought home its second tournament win of the season with a dominating performance by junior captain Camden Williams, who powered just short of half of the tossups heard on the day.

Mexico cleared a stacked field to bring home the championship. In the morning pool rounds, Mexico beat Carbondale IL, Orchard Farm B, Ladue B, and Hannibal scoring an average of 543 points per game, while their opponents averaged 50 points per game.

Williams was the morning's top scorer averaging 190 points per game.  The next-best player had 92 points per game.

Mexico entered the Championship Bracket after lunch and matched up against 2022's NAQT High School National Champions Detroit Catholic Central.  The game was close at the end of the first half, but the second half started with a 135-point swing toward Mexico as Williams powered three straight questions and worked with seniors Christian Frederickson and Liam Hoyle along with junior Carter Blackburn to sweep all three bonuses.  Mexico went on to win 405 - 270.

Mexico followed that win up with a win over Detroit Catholic Central's B-team 375 - 260.

After clearing those tough hurdles Mexico went toe-to-toe with the reigning Class 5 state champions Ladue.  Williams once again led the way, scoring 210 points, while Frederickson and Blackburn each scored 10 to dominate Ladue 620 - 80.

Mexico finished the afternoon rounds with another win against Carbondale 385 - 230 and Parkway West 495 - 200.  The Bulldogs entered the finals 9 - 0, while Detroit Catholic Central entered the finals 8 - 1, setting up the two powerhouse programs to go head to head in an advantaged final with Mexico having the advantage.

Along with Williams, Frederickson, Hoyle,  Blackburn, and juniors Dylan Reid and Lucita Gleeson who both proved valuable on bonus questions to lead the team to their title.

Once again, Mexico held a slim lead at the half over DCC.  And just like in their first matchup, the Bulldogs took the first three questions of the second half to put DCC in a major hole.  Williams put up 160 points as the Bulldogs pulled off a major upset in defeating DCC for the championship.

While national rankings have yet to come out, the Bulldogs' two tournament titles and a second-place finish at Mizzou have them likely to crack the top 25 in the nation.

The Bulldogs, who sport a current record of 28 - 2, have a weekend off before setting their sights on a third tournament title at Sullivan on Nov. 18.
