The Mexico girls are already working well together, and they have the results to prove it.
Last week, the Lady Bulldogs’ varsity squad won seven of eight sets played at the Hallsville team camp. In the previous week at Hallsville, Mexico was 8-4 overall among its three squads.
On the camp’s last on Thursday, Mexico won both sets against New Bloomfield and Christian Fellowship. Head coach Tami Sells this year’s team is looking good.
“Their coverage has been a lot better than what we’ve seen in the past,” Sells said. “They’re working better as a team and communicating better. It’s really all-around better play, but the team dynamic has changed a lot to the point that they’re able to communicate in a positive way with each other.”
Sells said better communication helps each individual girl’s skills shine, so playing better as a unit comes before anyone stands out.
“We have a fair number who have come back, but we have a fair number of ones joining the team as well,” Sells said. “It’s a way they play together as a team and just gel.”
Sells said the girls enjoy being around each other, and they have proven that with team bonding activities this summer. The Lady Bulldogs make sure to just talk after practice and get to know each other better.
After her first season coaching Mexico, Sells said encouraging team bonding was a main focus heading into this year.
“That was a big part of it — getting the team on the same page,” Sells said. “Instead of each individual player playing their best, it’s more about the team and making sure that was the best mentality for every player on the court.”
Mexico has a Mizzou team camp next week.
