Mexico girls’ late scoring drought costly in 49-38 loss at Capital City

The Mexico girls’ game was steady enough to win Friday in Jefferson City until the fourth quarter.

The Lady Bulldogs lost 49-38 at Class 5 Capital City after being outscored 11-5 in the fourth quarter, not too long after scoring 16 points in the third for their most productive quarter.

“It was partly due to the speed of Capital City making it hard for us to get by off the dribble,” head coach Ed Costley said. “Tonight, we didn’t come away with any transition points for easy scoring points.”

Costley said Capital City (6-17) also came up with 22 offensive rebounds for too many second chance points, and Mexico (8-15) couldn’t take advantage of shots from the perimeter, finishing 2-for-13.

Claire Hudson led the Lady Bulldogs with 11 points and six rebounds, Kenzie Taylor followed with eight points and six rebounds, Lexie Willer had seven points, and Messiah Simpson finished with five points and five rebounds.

Mexico (4-3 NCMC) played Tuesday at North Central Missouri Conference rival Fulton (7-15, 2-5 NCMC), with two victories already against the Lady Hornets this season. The Lady Bulldogs then traveled to conference foe Moberly (14-7, 7-0 NCMC) for a 6:30 p.m. Friday game.
