Mexico Ledger Sports Editor Jeremy Jacob won three awards in the 2026 Missouri Better Newspaper Contest sponsored by the Missouri Press Association.
Jacob received second and third place in the Best Sports Feature Story category. The second-place award was for his story on Mexico senior wrestler Grant Van Horn winning the state title. The judge’s comments were “Great interview. Solid background. A well done piece.”
The third-place award was a story on the Van-Far football team winning its first district title since 2000. The judge said, “A great way to weave history and current action together.”
Jacob also received a third-place award for Best Sports Photograph of a photo taken of North Callaway running back Jaiden Galbreath in a 54-0 win over Wright City.
The judge said, “Great shot. You really captured the intensity and sharpness.”
The awards were presented Saturday, Sept. 26, at the MPA Convention held in Columbia. The Ledger competed against other newspapers across the state with a similar circulation size for work published in 2025.
Mexico Ledger Publisher Tim Schmidt will continue serving on the Missouri Press Board of Directors in 2027. He is currently in his fifth year on the board. He has owned The Ledger since 2020.
Bryan Jones, publisher and owner of the Morgan County Statesman in Versailles, was elected president of the 2027 board. He will officially take office as MPA president Jan. 1.
