Update: This story reflects new information about the bond in the case.

Criminal charges have been filed against a Mexico man after he was allegedly involved in a two-vehicle car crash July 12 that resulted in the death of two Mexico residents. On Tuesday, Mexico Public Safety Department personnel arrested Joshua Frye in the 1300 block of Paris Road after his release from the hospital. He was taken to the Audrain County Jail without incident, according to a news release.

On Thursday, Audrain County Prosecuting Attorney Jacob Shellabarger said Frye was being held without bond in the case. Judge Melissa Buckman Young, after the bond hearing, found him to be a danger to the community, Shellabarger said. Frey's next bond hearing is set for July 31 and the preliminary hearing is set for Aug. 14.

Frye, 22, of Mexico is charged with DWI-death of two or more people and operating a motor vehicle in a careless and imprudent manner involving an accident, according to court files. The first charge is a felony and the latter charge is a misdemeanor.

Mexico Public Safety Department reported Frye was driving a 2016 Kia that collided with a 2012 Chrysler. Two occupants in Frye’s vehicle - Kristain Pritchett, 22, and Austin Terry, 27 - died in the crash. Elliot Kitson, 29, of Mexico was driving the Chrysler. Frye and Kitson were taken to University Hospital. Frye was listed in critical condition July 15. On Monday, the hospital said it had further information to release. The hospital had no information to release on Kitson.

"My office is waiting for an update on the condition of the other driver, and contact with that driver, before adding a charge for the injuries to that driver,"  Shellabarger said, referring to Kitson, in an email to the Ledger.

The police report stated that just before 6:40 a.m., MPSD personnel responded to the 4800 block of South Clark, Business U.S. Highway 54, regarding a crash. Police said the Kia was going southbound on Clark when it crossed the center line and collided with the Chrysler in the northbound lane. MPSD used extrication equipment and assisted Audrain Ambulance District personnel in removing people from the vehicles and treating them.

The crash remains under investigation.
