In 2003, two retiring Mexico Middle School teachers founded an award that recognizes students who go above and beyond.
Mexico Middle School students Maelynn Kirklin, daughter of Kim and Jonathon Kirklin; Anna Isgrig, daughter of Jessica and Dennis Isgrig; Collin Forrest, son of Andrea Owens and Stacy Forrest; and Julian Ruppel, son of Ivy Estrada and Chris Ruppel, were honored with the MMS Courtesy Awards at the spring awards ceremony on May 5.
Terry Henage and Janice Douglas recognized the importance of good character and behavior for an optimum learning atmosphere. They believed the public recognition of students demonstrating courtesy and respect would help foster this atmosphere, so they created the MMS Courtesy Awards.
Every year, two boys and two girls who have consistently demonstrated personal qualities of kindness, respect and courtesy to their classmates, teachers and school staff are presented with this award. Each recipient is elected by the MMS faculty and staff and awarded a check for $50.
Also, the recipients will have their names engraved on the MMS Courtesy Award plaque which is displayed in the awards showcase at the MMS.
