Other Mexico girls gather experience in win vs Battle

The Mexico girls had an opportunity on Wednesday.

Battle has four players so the Lady Bulldogs had several girls play for more experience to defeat the Lady Spartans 8-1. 

Two singles matches and a doubles match remained open to give Mexico the points so the Lady Bulldogs won three singles matches and both doubles matches. Winners for singles included Alice Eggen at 8-0, Daida Herrera-Garcia at 8-1 and Yolitza Rodriguez Rios at 9-7, and the doubles winners were Katie Gooch and Jyllian Whitworth at 8-0 and Lucy Gleeson and Lani Blair at 8-0.

Mexico hosted conference foe Kirksville on Thursday prior to playing the Troy Varsity Girls Tennis Tournament on Friday.

Lady Bulldogs show guts to defeat Hannibal for first time in four years

In four years, the North Central Missouri Conference girls tennis battle between Mexico and Hannibal hasn’t been that close.

On Tuesday in Hannibal, the Lady Bulldogs won their first conference matchup of the season and their first dual with the Lady Pirates (2-3, 1-2 NCMC) in four years with a 6-3 victory. In previous years, Mexico has lost 8-1 and 9-0 but had comeback singles wins by Jyllian Whitworth and Alice Eggen to give Mexico (3-5, 1-1 NCMC) a 4-2 singles edge.

Whitworth won her match 10-8 and Eggen forced her match into a tiebreak, winning 11-10 (8-6). Other singles victories included Katie Gooch winning 10-0 and Lani Blair winning 10-1.

In doubles, Gooch and Blair won 10-7 and Eggen and Daida Herrera-Garcia won 10-4.

Mexico junior varsity also won its dual 5-4 with wins by Alexis Smythe and Yolitza Rodriguez Rios at 10-6, Lea Hernandez and Marali Herrera-Sanchez at 10-7, Abby Bowen and Bailey Christianson at 4-2, Hernandez-Sanchez and Elise Galloway at 4-0, and Phoebe Whipple and Bowen at 4-0.

Mexico, MMA runners represent Mexico at MMA XC Meet

A Wednesday cross country had plenty of Mexico runners.

Athletes from Mexico and Missouri Military Academy competed against each other in the MMA XC Meet. 

Four MMA runners finished in the top 10 while five Mexico runners were in the top 10. Four of the top five spots were Colonels, including the winner Gerardo Quiroga with his time of 18:19.75.

Malachi Imrie was next for MMA in second place with a time of 18:59.60, David Trevino was third with a 19:23.54 and Michael Pfeifer was fifth with a 19:57.78. Boonville’s William Schenck was fourth with a 19:52.18. Rounding out the top 15 from places 12th to 15th were Colonels Tru Jones with a 21:37.99, John Trippe with a 21:41.85, Jacob Stallone with a 21:45.41 and Brody Ruckman with a 21:47.24.

For Mexico, it had runners finish from sixth through 11th place. Christian Frederickson was sixth with a time of 19:59.63, Kyle Lewis was seventh with a 20:16.07, Jacob Quinlan was eighth with a 20:21.60, Aaron Ortiz was ninth with a 20:45.44, Landon Higgins was 10th with a 20:54.80 and Braiden Bock was 11th with a 21:09.75.
