The losing streak is over Mexico boys soccer.
On Monday at home, the Bulldogs beat Fatima (1-8) 3-0 to bring a 10-game skid to an end. Oscar Alvarez-Zapot and Carlos Rodriguez-Hernandez scored goals as did Alex Matuz-Sanchez, when the goalkeeper was moved to the field near the end of the game.
“We’re hoping this spurs us on to play better,” head coach Bill Gleeson said. “We didn’t play our best, but we played better than we have been together. That was key that we played well together, and we were able to win a lot in the middle to secure that win.”
The losing streak was extended after the Bulldogs (2-11) lost three games at the Warrior Classic Tournament last week in Winfield following a tough stretch of the schedule against Kirksville, Moberly and Hannibal. Mexico lost 2-1 to Elsberry with Silex (3-5) on Sept. 23, 4-0 to champions Winfield (6-3) on Thursday, and 1-0 to Wright City (4-7) on Friday. Alvarez-Zapot scored the only goal for the Bulldogs.
Mexico hosts crosstown rival Missouri Military Academy (4-2) at 5 p.m. today.
MMA went 1-2 in the Spartan Invitational in Moberly on Thursday and Friday. The Colonels defeated Paseo Academy of Fine Arts 7-1, but they were handed their first losses and first shutout losses 4-0 to Kirksville (7-2) and 2-0 to Moberly (9-3). Eric Shellabarger had eight steals in the Kirksville game, and Christian Ramos had six steals
