Mexico softball’s past and future were recognized in this year’s postseason awards.
Seniors Brooke Teel, Jo Thurman and Karlee Sefrit and sophomores Hannah Loyd and Maddy Feger all earned postseason awards for their efforts in the Lady Bulldogs’ 16-12 campaign that included an 8-2 second-place finish in the North Central Missouri Conference. Teel, Thurman, Sefrit, Loyd and Feger were all selected as all-conference players and to the all-district team in Class 3 District 4 — Loyd as a first-team catcher, Teel and Thurman as a second team outfield and infielder, and Sefrit and Feger as an honorable mention infielder and outfielder.
Teel consistently reached base for Mexico this season and then put herself in scoring position. The leadoff hitter finished with a .414 batting average to lead the team while also owning team-highs with 33 stolen bases and 36 runs scored, a .448 on-base percentage, a .465 slugging percentage and five outfield assists, earning her first all-conference selection. The 33 stolen bases set a new program single-season record before Teel heads to Central Methodist University along with Sefrit.
Thurman went into this season as a University of Missouri softball recruit and demonstrated her good approach at the plate on her way to her fourth all-conference nod. She finished with a .342 average, 20 RBI, a team-high 18 walks, a team-high eight doubles and a .480 on-base, a .506 slugging, 13 stolen bases, 24 runs scored and a .953 fielding percentage.
Sefrit remained in the No. 3 hole for the entire season and was a run-producing presence the whole time. She finished with a .325 average, .404 on-base and had 22 RBI, 27 runs scored and five doubles.
Loyd made the all-conference team for the second time while being a constant concern for baserunners as Mexico’s catcher. She was also a big concern for opposing pitchers as she finished with a .321 average, a .389 on-base, a .617 slugging, team-highs of five home runs, 36 RBI and three triples, and 22 runs scored and 10 walks. From the catching position, Loyd recorded 23 assists, caught nine baserunners, only had four passed balls and owned a .944 fielding percentage.
Feger was selected to her first all-conference team after hitting well enough during the season to be moved to the No. 2 hole in the lineup. She finished with a .359 average, .453 on-base, a team-high 1.030 slugging and three triples, 15 walks, 26 RBI, two home runs, 12 stolen bases, 23 runs scored and five stolen bases. In the field, Feger recorded three outfield assists and a .972 fielding percentage.
