Mexico softball was in a sharing mood on Saturday.
The Lady Bulldogs had younger girls step on their new turf at Gallop Field to share the fundamentals of softball through a youth camp. Third- through fifth-graders were there in the morning and then sixth- through eighth-graders took their turn in the afternoon.
Head coach Hanna Jones said about 30 girls were at the first camp she and her players have hosted. Girls rotated at stations that tested their hitting, baserunning and fielding. They also played games, like a water balloon toss contest, that helped all the campers and helpers have fun.
Payton Shaw was one of several Lady Bulldogs who guided and helped the kids through the camp. Shaw said she has played softball for 10 years and enjoys being there for girls who are just starting out.
“I had a lot of fun,” Shaw said. “I really do enjoy teaching kids, showing them that softball really is fun and trying to get them to play if they really wanted to. I’m glad they all came out.”
