Mexico softball potent early in Spartan Round Robin, finish day 2-1

Mexico softball didn’t take long to make an impression on Saturday in Columbia.

The Lady Bulldogs played three games in the Spartan Round Robin hosted at Battle High School, going 2-1 during the day. In their first game, Mexico scored a season-high 21 runs — and the program’s most since a 23-13 victory in 2021 against Truman — on 18 hits against the host Lady Spartans. The team then defeated Marion C. Early on a walkoff single by Landri Teel and lost 5-2 to Father Tolton.

The extra-base hits alone were plentiful for Mexico (4-4) against Battle as the Lady Bulldogs had eight go beyond singles, including three home runs. Two of the homers were hit by Hannah Loyd to give her a 3-for-4 day at the plate and five RBI. Brooke Teel hit the other one to go 4-for-5 with four runs, two RBI and two stolen bases.

Maddy Feger had a standout game for Mexico after going 3-for-4 with two doubles and two RBI, and Kenley Jones went 2-for-4 with three RBI, three runs and a triple. Feger had one of those doubles and Jones had a two-RBI triple in Mexico’s seven-run fifth inning.

Emma Cunningham pitched five innings with five hits, one unearned run, one strikeouts and one walk.

Marion C. Early was the third-best team in Class 1 last year and made it clear early it was going to compete with Mexico. Aleigha Henderson allowed two runs in the first inning before the Lady Bulldogs answered back with a go-ahead two-RBI triple by Feger, who was 2-for-2 with three RBI.

Early went ahead 6-3 until Mexico took a 7-6 lead in the fifth inning after a Feger sacrifice fly. Jo Thurman, who was 2-for-3 with two RBI, had a RBI single and scored on a passed ball in that same inning and was the one to notch the game-tying RBI in the sixth inning on a walk.

Landri Teel was looking for her first hit with a runner on second base in the seventh inning and sent a line drive to center field for a walkoff victory.

Mexico allowed three runs in the fifth inning that broke a tie at 2 as Father Tolton hit a two-RBI double and a solo home run to win the shortened five-inning game. Kenley Jones went 2-for-3 with a RBI to lead Mexico, and Cunningham and Thurman combined to allow 10 hits in the circle.
