In April, Mexico residents will see a 4.11% increase to their monthly base rate for trash services.
At its Feb. 23 meeting, the Mexico City Council adopted a resolution that raises the monthly base rate for residential trash services to $16.29 with a fuel-cost-adjusted rate cap of $17.49. The new rate will be in effect from April 1, 2026 through March 31, 2027.
The $0.64 increase is based on the estimated annual operating costs for the Sanitation Department, which, according to Vicki Duenke, City of Mexico finance director, is $863,207. The anticipated costs include fees that cover household hazardous waste collection.
“We deduct any special pickup fees that are assessed to us,” she said. “If a resident has something bulky or large, those fees are taken out of consideration because they’re directly passed on to the customers.”
The total cost was then divided among the 4,415 residential accounts and split across the 12-month billing cycle.
In April 2024, the City of Mexico entered a 10-year residential sanitation services contract with Dayne’s Waste Disposal Inc. In addition to annual pricing, the contract includes fuel cost adjustments, which Duenke said fluctuate month to month.
During her report, Duenke provided the council with a sanitation fee survey that included municipalities in Boone, Callaway, Montgomery, Cooper, Knox, Cole, Saline, Randolph, Moniteau, Audrain and St. Charles counties. The average base rate is $19.27 and the only municipality in the survey with a lower base rate than Mexico was Vandalia at $13.80.
