Mexico's Bowen controls match, girls defeat Hannibal 30-12 in home dual

Mexico freshman Abby Bowen has wrestled Hannibal’s Malika Sturm before as she did Wednesday night at home.

The Lady Bulldogs defeated their North Central Missouri Conference foe 30-12 in Gooch gym, thanks partly to a third-period pin from Bowen. That victory earned Mexico six points and six points came on four open slots during the dual.

Three wrestled for head coach Tony Senor, including Bowen at 125 pounds, Ali Walotka at 120 and Karisa Hayden at 170.

Senor said Bowen and Sturm, first of all, have each improved since their first meeting. He said Bowen also made scratch weight — right at or below the target weight — on Wednesday, which is an accomplishment itself as it makes someone eligible for a class at districts. When she was on the mat, Senor said he liked Bowen’s control.

“She controlled the tie, and she controlled the match,” Senor said. “There were a few things she could have cleaned up, but for the most part, she did what she had to do.”

Senor said Bowen was “lights out” at Friday’s Capital City Tournament in Jefferson City, which is where Bowen finished first in the 125 weight class.

The junior Hayden lasted until the second period against Hannibal sophomore Sidney Zimmerman but was pinned in those two minutes. Despite Hayden being older, Senor said Zimmerman still has more wrestling experience than Hayden so he was impressed by what he saw from her.

“Zimmerman is predicted to go to state and possibly medal, and that girl has been wrestling a lot longer than Karisa,” Senor said. “Karisa almost had her on her back — a possible state medalist. She has been going upwards ever since Wonder Woman and since we’ve been practicing Christmas break.”

Senior Ali Walotka was pinned in the second period of her match, but Senor said she has been battling another opponent other than her Tuesday opponent, Hannibal’s Riah Wigfall.

“She has been battling some injuries a little bit here and there,” Senor said. “She’s been limited on practice time a little bit, but we are trying to get her healthy for districts and trying to get her healthy for the end of the season. The hope is to keep her healthy for that last stretch of the season.”

Mexico goes to a tournament in Chillicothe on Saturday before hosting the Brick City Girls Classic Dual Tournament with 10 teams on Monday.
