The Mexico girls couldn’t come out of the weekend with a win but had two standout performers.
The Lady Bulldogs finished 0-2-1 their three games Friday and Saturday in the Lady Spartan Invitational in Moberly, but defenders sophomore Kenley Jones and senior Lexie Willer were named to the all-tournament team in the Red Division.
Head coach Sarah Olson said Jones and Willer deserved the all-tournament honor after seeing their effort in protecting the goal. Freshman Katie Crew stepped in the net this weekend while senior and reigning all-conference goalkeeper Tessa Haefling was out and picked up the first shutout of her career.
Mexico (1-11-1) was shut out in all three games to finish fourth in the Red Division but held its opponents to a combined five goals. The Lady Bulldogs lost 4-0 to Jefferson City on Friday before, on Saturday, falling 1-0 to Mid-Buchanan and tying Boonville at 0.
“I was very proud of how the girls played,” Olson said. “We are picking up on pieces of the game that we have been working on in practice and talking about. We are starting to communicate well with each other and are having fun playing the game”
This week, Mexico (1-4 NCMC) switched attention to North Central Missouri Conference foe Marshall (7-2, 4-1 NCMC) on Monday and plays at district opponent Wright City (2-5) at 5 p.m. Thursday.
