Missouri Military Academy closes regular season with 2-1 win over Sunnydale

Posted

Missouri Military Academy soccer hopes to accomplish a feat it hasn't since 2018.

The Class 1 No. 5 Colonels are going for their first district championship starting Nov. 6 in Brentwood but had a regular season finale pop up on them Tuesday at home in Mexico. In a makeup game from Sept. 30, MMA defeated Sunnydale Adventist Academy, out of Centralia, 2-1 in its first ever victory over the Spartans and fifth straight victory to end the regular season. Earlier this season, MMA (13-4) lost 3-1 to Sunnydale (9-3), who owns wins this year over big schools like Southern Boone (5-1), Battle (7-1) and Father Tolton (2-1). After not scoring more than one goal in each of their previous three meetings, the Colonels scored twice in the first half on a penalty kick by Fernando Puebla in the 20th minute and on a breakaway by Alexander McBride off an assist from Puebla. Gihana Favour Nziza made 12 saves for the Colonels.

MMA has the No. 1 seed in its district for the first time since 2015 (another district championship year) as it faces the winner of STEAM Academy and Canton at 4 p.m. Nov. 6 in the Class 1 District 3 tournament in Brentwood.
