The Missouri Retired Teachers Foundation (MRTF) was in Audrain County last week handing out $500 checks to teachers for specific needs in their classrooms.

The MRTF received 342 applications this year and 126 grants were awarded. Of those 126, six were from Audrain County including five in the Mexico Public School District. Winners included: Eugene Field Elementary teacher Whitney Page Lewis, McMillan Early Learning Center teachers Maggie Resa, Margaret Frazier, Christine Schremp, and Melanie Addie. Community RVI teacher Candace Campbell.

A group from MRTF that featured teachers or employees of the particular school the award was being given at were also in attendance to present the checks.

Each teacher had to write a letter describing why they need the money and what they will spend the money on for their classroom.

Resa, who teaches preschoolers, will spend the money on play-based learning games that will help children develop critical thinking skills. Frazier, a music education teacher, will use the grant for a rug with personal areas for each student so students will have a comfortable place to sit while using their instruments. Schremp, a language arts, reading and social studies teacher, will use the money to purchase items designed to help early learners to focus, self-regulate and increase participation. Lewis, a speech and language therapy teacher, will use her grant on books to use while embolden inclusive literacy based structured therapy tasks for all students with learning delays. Addie, who is support staff, will use her grant for materials and manipulatives for early learners. Campbell, a fourth grade teacher, will use her grant for new seating and books to enhance their success in reading and comprehension.
