Missouri Military Academy (MMA) held the 90th annual W. Wallace Fry, Jr. Public Speaking Contest on Wednesday, May 4, in Centennial Gymtorium on MMA’s campus in Mexico, Missouri. MMA cadets participate in this annual contest by preparing speeches which utilize rhetorical devices taught during English Language Arts lessons.
Judges for the 2022 Wallace Fry contest included Chris Miller, mayor of the City of Mexico; Mr. Chris Schafer ’89, MMA business instructor; and local RE/MAX realtor Betty Jo Sydenstricker.
Judge Fry, MMA Class of 1903, inaugurated the contest in 1932 with the presentation of the W. Wallace Fry, Jr. Cup for Excellence in Speaking, presented to the cadet whose speech is judged to be the best based on delivery, content and depth of thought.
Cadet Kamil Sanchez de Ovando Pérez, a seventh grader from Ciudad de México, México, was awarded the Joy McGeorge Middle School Oratory Award. This award is presented to the middle school cadet whose speech is judged to be the best based on charismatic and knowledgeable oratory skill.
Cadet René Garcia Garza, a senior Cadereyta Jimenez, N.L., México; was awarded the Winston Churchill Memorial Award, presented to the cadet who speaks most persuasively on behalf of a just cause.
Cadet Kevith Sangster, a senior from Las Vegas, Nev., won the W. Wallace Fry, Jr. Cup for Excellence in Speaking.
In addition to Garcia Garza and Sanchez de Ovando Pérez, this year’s competitors included Cadets Nathaniel Bowman, a high school senior from Blue Springs; Mason Kletjian, a sophomore from Chadds Ford, Pa.; and Miles Matthews, a freshman from Fairfield Bay, Ark.; and Sebastian Valdes Barreto, an eighth grader from Monterrey, N.L., México.
