Paris slow start vs Louisiana leads to 6th place in Monroe City

The Paris girls earned a game on Friday for the fifth-place prize in the consolation game but couldn’t get going offensively.

The Lady Coyotes lost 37-21 to Louisiana after trailing 21-9 at halftime in the Monroe City Basketball Tournament.

Alyssa Webb led Paris with nine points while going 3-for-6 at the free throw line, and Reese Sutton and Sophia Crusha each followed with five points. 

Raegan Bowser led Louisiana (3-2) with a game-high 13 points while going 7-for-8 at the free throw line.

The Lady Coyotes managed to equal their first-half total with nine points in the third quarter but trailed 25-18 at that point.

Paris (3-3) played its Lewis and Clark Conference opener against Marceline (3-2) on Tuesday at home before traveling to conference foe Schuyler County (5-1) to play at 6 p.m. Friday and facing Van-Far (1-4 as of Monday) at 10 a.m. Saturday in the Gary Filbert Classic at the Mexico Sports Complex in Mexico.

Lady Coyotes earn trip to consolation final after defensive battle with Mark Twain

The Paris girls shut out Mark Twain in the first quarter Wednesday but had to battle until the end.

The Lady Coyotes defeated for the second time this season with a 26-20 victory in the consolation round of the Monroe City Basketball Tournament, advancing to Friday’s final against Louisiana (1-3). Paris (3-2) outscored the Lady Tigers 7-0 in the first quarter before holding on to a one-possession lead of 13-11 after two quarters and tying at 16 after the third quarter.

Reese Sutton was the only player to score in double figures, finishing with 11 points and hit two 3-pointers, Alyssa Webb followed with five points, and Sophia Crusha was 4-for-6 at the free throw line. Sutton scored five of her points in the deciding fourth quarter, when Paris outscored Mark Twain 10-4. The Lady Coyotes were 5-for-10 from the line in the quarter.

For the Lady Tigers (0-5), Adalynne Means and Taylor Martin each scored nine points.

Paris struggles again vs state-ranked South Shelby in 72-10 loss

The Paris girls had already played Class 3 No. 3 South Shelby but had to face them again Monday.

The Lady Coyotes lost 72-10 in the first round of the Monroe City Basketball Tournament, being shut out in the first quarter, after losing 56-8 in the first matchup at home a week prior. Paris shot 20 percent from the field while South Shelby tallied 22 steals.

Emma Ashenfelter led with four points, and Sophia Crusha had three steals. For South Shelby, Hannah Gaines had 15 points, and Kaylee Gaines followed with 12 points. Callie McWilliams, Jayda Lanpher and Belle Roush combined for 15 of South Shelby’s steals.

Paris loses fourth straight in 53-25 defeat to Mark Twain

It was the Paris boys’ second loss to Mark Twain but was also their fourth straight defeat overall.

The Coyotes were eliminated from the Monroe City Basketball Tournament on Dec. 7 after a 53-25 loss to Mark Twain, who they lost to 58-46 at home to begin this skid.

Paris (1-4) finished 29.7 percent from the floor to fall behind 30-13 at halftime while also turning the ball over 30 times to lead to 17 points for Mark Twain (4-2) off the miscues.

Evin Riechmann led Paris with six points while Mason Edwards, Walter Rucker and Alex Williams each scored four points.

Conner Eckler had a game-high 19 points for Mark Twain, finishing with three steals — only behind the five tallied by Jaxen Lake. Josh Brothers followed with 10 points and six rebounds.

Paris tried to snap its losing streak Tuesday night in its Lewis and Clark Conference opener at home against Marceline (0-4) prior to traveling to conference foe Schuyler County (5-1) for a 7:30 p.m. game Friday and facing Van-Far (2-3 as of Tuesday) at 11:45 a.m. in the Gary Filbert Classic at the Mexico Sports Complex in Mexico.

Coyotes drop first Monroe City game against eventual champion Palmyra

The Paris boys had to play the best in the field Dec. 5 in the first round of the Monroe City Tournament.

The No. 2 seed Palmyra went on to win the tournament after defeating No. 4 South Shelby 45-29 on Saturday but started the tournament by handing Paris a 42-28 loss. 

Paris shot 24.3 percent from the field, lost the turnover battle 17-10 and were outscored in the paint 28-14. 

Ever since going north of 40 points in their first two games, the Coyotes have failed to reach 30 points.

Mason Edwards gave Paris one double-figure scorer with 13 points and five rebounds, Colton Poddany followed with six points and five rebounds, and Walter Rucker had a team-high six rebounds and two steals. 

For Palmyra (6-0), Bear Bock led with 17 points, seven rebounds and one block, and Rafe Jones had 13 points.
