Police in Jacksonville, Illinois, arrested a man in connection with an alleged shooting case in Mexico in August.

Montrel I. Burton, 33, was arrested Tuesday and is currently in the Morgan County, Illinois, Detention Facility awaiting extradition back to Audrain County, according to a news release from the Mexico Public Safety Department. Jacksonville Police Department officers found Burton and attempted to arrest him, but he fled into a house and would later come out without incident and was taken into custody.

On Aug. 24, just before 6:40p.m., Mexico Public Safety Department personnel responded to the 1300 block of North Washington regarding a disturbance involving a gun. Responding personnel learned that Burton was at a home in that block when he took a handgun belonging to the resident, pointed the gun at the resident and eventually fired one shot before fleeing, the news release stated.

The investigation led to a report being forwarded to the Audrain County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office on Aug. 25, and that office obtained an arrest warrant for Burton for robbery-first degree, unlawful use of weapon, armed criminal action, and unlawful possession of a firearm. There were no injuries from the incident, the release stated.

MPSD worked with the Audrain County Sheriff’s Department in an attempt to find and arrest Burton on the warrant. Information obtained indicated he had traveled to Jacksonville, Illinois, and the Jacksonville Police Department was notified.
