A fire Friday caused severe damage to a carport and minor damage to a home.
There were no injuries, and the fire was reportedly caused by a yard waste burn that got out of control, according to a news release from the Mexico Public Safety Department.
At approximately 1:26 p.m., MPSD responded to a structure fire in the 900 block of Latney. Responding personnel found an attached carport covered in flames, and the fire was spreading to the home.
According to the release, the resident had been burning yard waste in a burn barrel near the carport. When the fire spread beyond the barrel, the resident attempted to extinguish it with a leaf blower. Thinking the fire was put out, the resident stepped inside for a few minutes before discovering the contents of the carport burning.
The fire was contained and extinguished by MPSD, but the carport and personal items stored underneath it were completely destroyed. There was also minor fire damage to the home.
